Two Courteeners super fans are celebrating their favourite band by getting married on the same day the group play at Emirates old Trafford.
The couple, who have been together since 2009, will exchange vows across the road at Trafford Town Hall before coming to Emirates Old Trafford for their reception.
Groom, Pete Richards, speaking on how the idea came about, said: “We love the Courteeners and the support group the Blossoms, so it was pretty much the perfect line-up. Abbie then said, ‘Right, this is our wedding day’. I just laughed it off and went back to work. About half an hour later I got a notification on Facebook; Abbie had tagged me in a photo and commented; this has got to be our wedding day.
“She phoned me up five minutes later and she said she was being serious about it.
“My mum and dad were a bit dubious about it at first and Abbie's Dad didn't know about it till a week later! All our friends have been buzzing and they're all so up for it and I can't wait.”
Over the last couple of months the NME, BBC and Manchester Evening News have all featured the couple’s story and Richards can’t believe the interest it’s gained. “As soon as we got the tickets sorted, we tweeted the Courteeners lead singer Liam Fray who retweeted us and it’s just been crazy! It still all seems a bit surreal. We can’t thank Emirates Old Trafford and Trafford Council enough. They have both been fantastic with us from the start.”
The couple and their 67 wedding guests will have access to a private suite at the ground with views of the stage but bride to be Abbie has insisted she will still be down on the pitch with the 50,000 other Courteeners fans, in full wedding dress, when the music starts!
Talking about what the Courteeners might do for the couple, Richards said: “We saw they were doing a signing session at HMV that we were going to anyway. They said they would do something for us. There was some talk about the day before the gig that when they're doing their sound checks, they might sing our wedding song and just sing it to us. If that happens, it really would be incredible and make our wedding.”
Cllr Laura Evans, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Transformation and Resources, said: “Congratulations to the happy couple and what a great way to celebrate their special day! When Emirates Old Trafford approached us for about Pete and Abbie’s wedding we were only too pleased to help.
“Our wedding packages guarantee anyone who wishes to hold their wedding at the Town Hall, or any of our other venues, will have a day to remember.”
VIP packages are still available for The Courteeners concert at Emirates Old Trafford, prices start from £149 inc. VAT including a top price ticket, food and drink.
